Lo stornello (da non confondersi con la stornella romagnola) è un tipo di poesia generalmente improvvisata, molto semplice, d'argomento amoroso o satirico, affine alla filastrocca. Lo stornello è originario dell'Italia centrale, in particolare Umbria, Lazio e Marche, diffusosi successivamente anche nell'Italia meridionale.

Secondo alcuni storici della letteratura e della musica, il termine stornello deriverebbe dall'uso di cantare a storno e a rimbalzo di voce da un luogo a un altro. Un'altra ipotesi deriverebbe il termine "stornello" dal provenzale estorn, ossia combattimento, a sottolineare l'intento ludico dei cantanti, che si provocavano a vicenda indirizzandosi i versi improvvisati.



The stornello (not to be confused with the stornella romagnola) is a type of poetry generally improvised, very simple, with a love or satirical subject, similar to the nursery rhyme. The stornello is native to central Italy, particularly Umbria, Lazio and Marche, and later also spread to southern Italy.

According to some historians of literature and music, the term stornello derives from the use of singing in a starling and bouncing voice from one place to another. Another hypothesis would derive the term "stornello" from the Provençal estorn, meaning combat, to underline the playful intent of the singers, who provoked each other by directing their improvised verses.
